Essential oils have so many incredible uses for supporting our bodies, lifestyle and around our home.
I’m a mother of two precious children and we love to use our Essential Oils safely to support our childrens health and wellbeing.
As a new mother, being introduced to these oils when my baby was just 5 weeks old changed the way I parent and I rate these EO’s so high. My daughter Violet is 3.5 and has incredibly never had a cough, we’ve never visited a doctor and have found a runny noses never stay for long. My son maxwell, 1.5 is the same. Believe the hype.
While it may seem like essential oils are just the latest and greatest thing, they’ve actually been used by humans for millennia. We are not making this stuff up.
Our mini humans have tiny bodies, remember that oils are potent, and you only need a very small amount to achieve efficacy, especially when it comes to children. A little bit goes a very long way and MUST be used with care.
Here’s some safety tips we use…
I personally chose not to use Essential Oils topically on my babies under the age of one, and only use them when we need them topically.
DIFFUSE- Diffusing can give you the benefits of essential oil without the worry of skin reactions. Inhaled oils have long been studied for their ability to enhance feelings of relaxation, encouragement, excitement, focus, well-being and may support a healthier indoor environment. When we diffuse in my childrens bedroom at night we leave their doors open to keep the rooms well ventilated.
DILUTION- Kids’ skin is different from adult skin; it’s thinner and generally more sensitive. Even though most oils tend to be non-irritating on the skin (especially on the bottom of the feet, where the skin is thickest), it’s a great idea to dilute essential oil in a good carrier oil before applying to children. You’ll still get the same benefits of the essential oil—you’re just adding extra moisture and pampering delicate child skin. The doTERRA Touch products are great for this, they’re our favorites!
If you’ve seen my 3.5 year old Violet (Check out our Instagram stories @thesegratefuldays, she is a star) you will know how much she loves Essential Oils, and how she loves to apply then herself (I think it’s a stage) I feel, under my mindfull eye, very safe allowing her to apply the doterra touch, however ALL of our oils are kept safely out of reach of our children.
TOPICAL- To use topically, dilute EO more than you would for yourself to make a weaker/more dilute blend.
Here are the suggested dilutions:
For babies: use 1 drop essential oil (EO) to 10ml carrier oil
For toddlers: use 1 drop EO to 5ml carrier oil
It’s a good idea to test the diluted EO on a small area to make sure your little one doesn’t have any reactions either to the EO or to the carrier oil.
Here’s a list of other essential oils that are SAFE to use on and around small children:
These essential oils are NOT safe to use with babies and small children:
EasyAir blend (babies under 2)
OnGuard blend (babies under 2)
As mothers we have incredible intuition, having these safe alternatives we are empowered to support our families health and wellbeing in a natural non toxic way. My advice, go with your gut, always read the label and seek medical advice if you are unsure. Remember we are not medical professionals, and there is always a need for modern medicine should we need it, these tools simply and safely offer us a solution for the in between stuff.
